While programming a web application is at the core of what we do (and, incidentally, at the core of each and every web application we write), there are also peripheral concerns that can still make or break a website's success. When we really sat down to think about it, these concerns were not peripheral after all, but quite central.
The design of a website includes how it looks and how easy it is to use the site. The database structure behind a web application determines, to a large extent, how quickly it performs, how well it checks for things that could go wrong, and how it saves information. Because these aspects of web application development are so central to the success of a web application, we devote special attention to them so we can focus on executing these aspects well.
